Australian Statistics


Of the 13,076 on-shore applications for refugee status received during 2000-2001, the Department of Immigration Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) issued 5, 579 Protection Visas. These were divided into two categories:

1. Permanent Protection Visas (PPV's), which permit permanent residence status were granted to 1,127 asylum seekers

2. Temporary Protection Visas (TPV's), which permit temporary resident status for three years were granted to 4,452 asylum seekers.

The following chart shows the total number of protection visas granted by visa type and nationality of applicant.

DIMIA: Population Flows

Of the 5,579 visas granted 851 Protection visas were granted following appeals to the Refugee Review Tribunal (RRT) and a further 77 were granted a visa through direct appeals to the Minister.

The top source countries for people seeking refugee status during 2000-2001 were, Afghanistan 17%, Iraq 9.5 and People's Republic of China (PRC) 9%.
