Please note: this website was created in 2003 and there have been several changes in relevant Australian legislation since that time (probably Canadian too). The website is kept online as an overview of the situation at that time but has not and will not be updated.

 Canada - Housing

Asylum seekers in Canada must find their own accommodation while their claims are being processed (in contrast to those who apply as refugees from overseas are part of the resettlement program).

There are a number of community organisations that run shelters or hostels to assist refugee applicants with accommodation. These include the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture and the FCJ Sisters Hamilton House Project.

Case Study

"After three months we got a flat and we moved out of the hotel.

"We received 1120 dollars per month in social support and out of that we paid 500 dollars a month rent."
